Mei is a mermaid with a curious nature. Nothing like asking a few questions and exploring here and there. Of course, she doesn’t want to come off as nosy and knows not to cross lines. The mermaid enjoys socializing and is quite people-oriented. Never the one to decline company and always an attentive, empathetic listener. Mei is very affectionate with the ones she loves and feels close to. She adores kisses on the forehead and lots’o huggin. Even though she is physically fragile due to her condition, the mermaid likes to be optimistic about her world. Whenever she first meets someone new, she always sees them in the best light. No faults, nothing bad, no judgement. Mei is also an altruistic individual and is unselfishly concerned for the well-being of others. Be that as it may, every fish has got to have some flaws. Mei is no different. She may not look like the type but she is outspoken. She doesn’t have a problem being frank about her opinions and hate two-faced merfolks. If she doesn’t like it, this mermaid will tell you straight-out. She isn’t the one to get angered easily but once she is, Mei will give you the silent treatment. A grudgeholder that won’t forgive you until you say sorry a bazillion times. Second chances are rare for traitors and liars so watch out. The mermaid is stubborn as a mule once a decision’s been made. End of discussion. She gets jealous easily because of her possessiveness of people and may even get overprotective. However, Mei knows the feeling of being overly sheltered so if you tell her to leave, she’ll comply.

Bio: Mei Zhen was born in China’s seas when the waters were still clear of pollution. Her mother and father were map-makers and often were not home. She grew up with her older brother, Fang. Due to their parents’ absence, Fang took it upon himself as her guardian and sheltered her from the outside world. Mei was always warned and told horrifying stories by her brother about humans and other dangers in the sea. It frightened her so much resulting in her promising to never go outside without him.
As she reached her 17th birthday, there was a gigantic storm that hit the seas of China. Worried that her brother wouldn’t make it in time, Mei went out to quickly search for him - breaking the promise that she made with Fang. Meanwhile, her brother had hurried back home safely in the opposite direction of his sister. When he found out that Mei was no longer at home, Fang panicked. Just as he was about to leave the house, the storm hit and the strong waves crashed onto the stone walls of their home. There was nothing left to do but wait the storm out and pray to the gods that Mei was safe.
When the winds died down, Fang erratically searched for Mei far and wide. Nothing was more important than finding his sister. Getting lost in a storm like that was dangerous. The fast currents could carry a full-grown merman to another ocean if unlucky. Worse, one could crash into a rock and it’d be K.O.
After searching for two days, Fang finally found her in the cold North Pacific Ocean….but not the way he wanted to find her. Mei was tangled up in a long fishing net and her gills were covered with a bunch of human garbage. She looked…lifeless.
“No...Mei!” He was struck with terror as he frantically cut the ropes with his teeth. He managed to untangle her from the deadly net and examined her.
“Please Mei, you can’t be...you just...can’t be..” Like a miracle, her eyes weakly fluttered open and she gave him a weak smile before she lost consciousness.
Five years after the incident, Mei slowly managed to get better but her health wasn’t like it used to be. She had respiratory problems ever since the storm catastrophe. To top it off, the pollution in China was getting worse and worse every day; Mei’s health deteriorated as the trash and oil spills increased. Her parents remembered a place called the Bermuda Triangle - a safe haven for mermaids and the waters over there to be so pure that it could heal any illness. They decided that they would send Fang and Mei Zhen to the ancient sanctuary with the hope to cure her sickness.
Thoughts on Humans: “I’ve never met them personally but the pollution they create is horrendous! The beauty of my home has been turned into nothing but garbage...”
